The Vela Supernova Remnant

Constellation: Vela

The Vela SNR is located in the southern constellation of Vela. It is approximately 11’000 years old and about 900 Ly from earth. The Vela SNR includes the Pencil nebula (NGC 2736), which is vilisble in the southeastern corner of the image. Slightly south of the center, one can also see theyoung  open cluser NGC 2659.

The Vela SNR overlaps the Puppis A SNR (SNR 260.4-03.4, in the northwestern corner of the image), which is located about 6’500-7’000 Ly from earth. The Puppis A SNR contains several RCW objects (28 to 31) that are filaments of this SNR (see RCW 29).

Data acquired remotely during winter and spring 2023-2024 using Martin Pugh’s equipment. 

His telescope is located in Australia (Observatory: Heaven’s second mirror, NSW).

Colour palette is HOO.
