Sh2-103, the Cygnus Loop

Sh2-103, the Cygnus Loop, is a large supernova remnant in the constellation of Cygnus. It lies about 2’400 Ly from Earth and is about 120 Ly in diameter. It is about 20’000 years old. The scond image is annotated with its key visual components.

Details of Pickering’s Triangle, a segment of relatively faint nebulosity was discovered photographically in 1904 by Williamina Fleming at Harvard Observatory, where Edward Charles Pickering was director at the time.
