RCW 49, the Whirling Dervish nebula
Constellation: Carina
RCW 49, also known as NGC 3247 and Gum 29, is a H-II region, associated with an open cluser, in the constellation Carina. It is located about 13’700 Ly away and 300-400 Ly across. Westerlund 2 is the young star cluster within Gum 29. The bright star in the WNW is part of the open cluster IC 2581. Link to interactive sky chart.
