NGC 2207 & IC 2163

Constellation: Canis Major

NGC 2207 and IC 2163 are two colliding spiral galaxies in the constellation of Canis Major. They are about 80 million Ly away. NGC 2207, the larger of the two galaxies is an intermediate spiral galaxy, while IC 2163 is a barred spiral galaxy. While NGC 2207 is in the process of colliding and merging with IC 2163, they are still two separate galaxies, and hence only in the first step of their close encounter. One can recognize the tidal effects of NGC 2207 on the smaller IC 2163. It is likely that in about a billion years the two galaxies will merge into an elliptical galaxy.
