LBN 794, IC and Messier 38
Constellation: Auriga
This image covers the region northeast of the Flaming Star nebula and contains the elongated red emission nebula LBN 794, the emission nebula IC 417, and the open clusters NGC 1907 and NGC 1912 (Messier 38). Link to interactive sky chart.
The southestern bright nebula IC 417 (sometimes refered to as the Spider nebula) is energized the hot blue mutiple star BD+34 1054 (spectral class O9.5V), as well as some of the neighbouring stars (classes B0.5V to B1.5V). The bluish clouds of gas are locations of new star formation.
Messier 38 (also known as the Starfish cluster) is an open cluster located about 3’480 Ly from Earth, while its “southern neighbour”, NGC 1907, is located at about 4’500 Ly from Earth.
