IC 443, The Jellyfish nebula

Constellation: Gemini

This image covers the region of the Jellyfish nebula (IC 443), a supernova remnant, and IC 444 in the constellation of Gemini. IC 443 is about 5’000 Ly from Earth. IC 443 may be the remains of a supernova that occurred 30’000 – 35’000 years ago. The same supernova event likely created the neutron star CXOU J061705.3+222127. IC 443 is one of the best-studied cases of supernova remnants interacting with surrounding molecular clouds. At the bottom left, one can also see the planetary nebula HoCr 1.
