NGC 3584 – The Statue of Liberty nebula

The Statue of Liberty nebula (containing NGC 3579, NGC 3581, NGC 3582, NGC 3584, NGC 3586 and NGC 3576) is a large and bright emission nebula in the constellation of Carina. It is a star-forming region. It is located in the Sagittarius of the Milky Way, about 9’800 Ly from Earth. Link to interactive sky chart. See also.

This is derived from the outstanding data taken by Martin Pugh in February 2024 (Martin’s website: Remote Astrophotography with Martin Pugh (martinpughastrophotography.space).
His telescope is located in Chile (Observatory: El Sauce).

The Statue of Liberty nebula in a wide field of view (towards the north): It contains a number of interesting objects such as the NGC 3603, NGC 3752, NGC 3532, NGC 3503 and several planetary nebulae.
This image was taken from Heaven’s Mirror observatory with a SharpStar 140 and the SBIG STXL16200 camera: Ha: 48x600s; Oiii: 46x600s; Sii: 47x600s, for a total integration time of 23h 30′.
NGC 3572, is a young open star cluster just south of the nebulosity. It contains the planetary nebula PhJa 1.
Also visible are the blue planetary nebulae Pre 43 (left middle) and PN G289.8+00.5 (the top right ).
Above: NGC 3532 (Caldwell 91) is an open cluster about 1’321 Ly from Earth. There are also two faint planetary nebulae near x (chi) Car: PN G289.8+01.2 and PN G289.8+01.3. See also.
Above: The Reflection nebula NGC 3503 and surrounding nebulosity.
Left: H-II region BRAN 347 (a.k.a Gum 36), which is likely ionized by the star HD 97471) and/or the open cluster Stock 13. A key feature of this region is the high-mass young stella object (YSO) IRAS 11101-5829. For a closer look at this area See also.
