Messier 27, also known as NGC 6853 and the Dumbbell nebula, is a planetary nebula located in the constellation of Valpecula. It is located about 1360 Ly from Earth. The image was taken with narrowband filter: Hydrogen-α, Oxygen III and Sulfure II.
A planetary nebula is a region of cosmic gas and dust formed from the cast-off outer layers of a dying star. Despite their name, planetary nebulae have nothing to do with planets.
